I’ve been going through my old MOC photos trying to inspire myself for my next build. This next project requires lighting, so I bough a LightMyBricks<\/a> kit to try out. MOC lighting has been around the AFOL community for awhile now — it might have started at BrickWorld, and the technology has only gotten better over time. At first, it was crude with only lighting up the inside of buildings. Now it’s evolved to set mood… Make “neon” lights with EL lighting…<\/p>\n\n\n

When creating MOCs for Star Wars Celebration, I wanted something that would “pop” on the convention floor. So I experimented with rope lighting — which worked really well for a my Mustafar MOC — it added a nice underglow. I tried something similar with my Floating Moonbase MOC, but the EL lighting made it look like wires under the plate — I revered to the old method of adding a layer of white plate under the trans-green bricks, which picked up the natural light to make the MOC “glow”. I was also under the constraint of not using plug-in lights (I was transporting the MOC to a different country), so it had to be battery powered. Also, it had to be transportable\/lightweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
